About ME at MMMUT Gorakhpur

The Mechanical Engineering Department is among the oldest academic departments at MMMUT Gorakhpur, with its origins dating back to 1962. Over the years, the department has built a strong academic and research environment supported by experienced faculty members, technical staff, and well-established laboratory facilities.

The department has a notable alumni network, with graduates working in government, semi-government, and private sector organizations in India and abroad. Students also get opportunities to participate in technical and extracurricular activities through platforms such as the SAE Collegiate Club (MMMUT Chapter) and the ASME Student Section. The department continues to support academic learning, research activities, and overall student development through its teaching, laboratory, and technical resources.

Key Highlights

  • Core branch focused on machines and systems
  • Mix of theory, numericals and practical understanding

  • Strong base for GATE and technical exams
  • Requires consistent effort and smart preparation

Programs Offered by the Mechanical Engineering Department

Undergraduate Programme • B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering Postgraduate Programmes • M.Tech. in Energy Technology and Management (since 2013) • M.Tech. in CAD/CAM Robotics (introduced from A.Y 2026-27) Doctoral Programme • Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering Note: The department also offered M.Tech. in Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) from 2001 to 2025.

Minor Degree Programs Offered by ME (For Other Branches)

If you are studying in branches like CSE, EE, or Civil but have an interest in mechanical subjects, MMMUT gives you the option to pursue a Minor Degree in Mechanical Engineering. This optional program starts from the 4th semester. By the time you graduate, you get a dual-degree experience—like a B.Tech in CSE with a Minor in Smart Manufacturing. The university provides this option completely free of cost to help students learn industry-ready skills. ► List of Minor Options You can select only one minor area for your entire B.Tech. For the 2024-2028 batch, the Mechanical department has offered these four areas (keep in mind that the college might update these lists for future batches, so always verify from official notices): • Robotics and Automation • Energy and Environment • Smart Manufacturing • Computational Engineering ► Subject and Credit Rules To get this minor degree printed on your final degree certificate, you have to pass 5 extra subjects (Professional Electives) offered by the ME department. You will take one extra subject every semester, starting from the 4th up to the 8th semester. Since each subject carries 4 credits, you need to collect a total of 20 extra credits over these five semesters. ► Minimum Students and MOOC Rules There is a basic condition for these minor classes to actually run. A specific minor subject will only start if at least 15 students choose it. If the student count is less than 15, the department simply drops that option for your batch. If that happens, you will have to select another ME minor that has enough students. Also, the ME department allows you to complete some of these minor subjects online through MOOC platforms like Swayam/NPTEL, strictly following the regular university guidelines. ► What if you can't complete it? If you fail to pass all 5 extra subjects by the end of your 4th year, there is nothing to worry about. You will still safely receive your regular B.Tech degree in your main branch without any problem, just without the minor certificate.

Number of B.Tech Seats in Mechanical Engineering (First Year)

For Mechanical Engineering, there are exactly 138 seats available in the first year. This is divided into 120 regular seats, 6 TFW seats for UP students, and 12 seats for outside states. Just like Civil, many students in ME upgrade to upper branches during internal sliding when someone leaves their seat. Because of this chain reaction, you have a very high chance of getting a Mechanical seat easily in the spot round.
